Patrik Karlsson – musiker, pedagog, initiativtagare

Katarina Widell – musiker

EN.D.E hos IDKA i Gävle den 24 februari

Posted: February 19, 2011 in EN.D.E

Katarina Widell and Patrik Karlsson

Pressmeddelande skrivet av My Eklund

Sea of kids

Posted: November 5, 2010 in My projects

Today we did our first gig. We were picked up at the hotel and headed towards the concert town, I can’t remember what the town’s called unfortunately but it was situated way up in the hills about an hour drive from Osaka. We stopped halfway there and was taken to lunch by Youshi, our host and organizer of all the concerts we are doing. He is also a professor at the largest university for women, over ten thousands students are attending. After lunch we got into the mini bus and drove the last half hour through really nice country side up and down the hills. When we arrived at our destination we found out that there would be over 600 kids in the audience, and of course we wondered if they would listen to some swedes playing the lute and recorder.

As the hall started to fill and rows and rows of children gathered we sat down at a table at the side of the hall and listened to the organizer talk to them and I could here her mentioning Sweden and probably asking them if they knew where it was. The gig went well, we started with duello by Martin Q Larsson, jumping on to the stage and fiercely played and the kids laughed and enjoyed themselves. We continued with some older music and they where a bit more calm, don’t know if they liked it or just fell a sleep. We ended the gig by teaching them some Swedish words and that seemed to be a highlight for many of them. We could hear them screaming Hej då, (good bye), when we drove of.

Sleepless in Osaka

It’s four in the morning here in Osaka, and I woke up two hours ago and couldn’t sleep any further. I don’t feel any frustration or anything bad about not being able to sleep, the city is fairly calm and the hotel is playing soft jazz in the lobby. It’s very nice.

Katarina and I was picked up at the airport and driven here to the hotel, it took a while to find the place so we got to see quite a bit of Osaka. It’s a beautiful city, just by the ocean and when we got of the airplane and walked outside the terminal the wind was full of the nice crisp scent of fresh ocean air.

We were taken to lunch after a quick shower and of course we had sushi. In Stockholm there’s a sushi place in every corner so we just went with the more familiar option of all the options. I must say that nothing here seems odd or unfamiliar to me, I was a bit surprised. It’s like being in Stockholm or Philadelphia, just a little bit more Japanese people running around, and they are not acting different in any way.

Many people have told me about how different everything is and finding food is a big hassle, but it’s not a problem. I don’t speak Japanese and they sometimes don’t speak that much english but it’s no worries, they are helping you with everything at restaurants and stores so after less than three hours in this country I felt at home.

After lunch we had a couple of hours sleep, which might be the reason for me being awake now, the we went outside and walked around. There’s especially one long, long street with food stores, restaurants and everything else you need and this street is for bikers and pedestrians only. It looks a lot like the china town streets you find in some western countries. The lights are flashing everywhere, and we were mesmerized by all the blinking signs and just kept walking and walking, wondering what the next bright light would hold in its glowing promise. There are huge arcades where middle age people are playing arcade games and apparently just came from work, sitting in their office clothes in full concentration driving a car or killing zombies.

On this street is where we found the place we dinner, actually it was a narrow alley leading away from the street. We had a barbecue, a platter with meets and some vegetables and then we grilled it over some coals. Very tasty.

The frets are a-changin’

Posted: October 29, 2010 in My projects

Today I had to change frets on the lute, we are leaving for Japan on tuesday and I want some fresh frets on the lute. It is a pretty nice soothing process and the burning matches always get me thinking of christmas.

First I light a match and burn one of the ends

I create a loop at the burned end

Put the unburnt end through the loop.

I then tighten the whole thing by pulling the string, and when it is nice and tight I burn it off with another match. Make sure that you don´t tie the string at the exact spot you want the fret to be positioned,  tie it closer to the lute’s head. Usually i put it were the fret below is supposed to be.

I burn the knot a little more

I move the fret into position

And done

Cut the tape, at least the red one

I always write out of inspiration, but this subject was difficult. The reason for that is that it includes looking through budget proposals, boring political parties policies and to top it of the cultural political discussion is lead by douches in office.

So I’ve thrown away my two other attempts citing budgets and other stuff and just link to it, you can check it out yourself. Because I want to write about my vision, a vision that was inspired from a little suggestion at a RANK* meeting by composer Ida Lundén and by a breakfast at the beach. Ida’s vision was laughed at as naive by many high ranking people at that meeting, but it was the only sensible and creative thing that came out of that weekend.

All the billions of swedish crowns that are budgeted for culture and sports here in Sweden is eaten up by to much administration and expensive buildings and arenas. A maximum of 15% of the budget should go to administration. The fundings are also given to a very narrow kind of arts, especially in the musical field. The orchestras and operas get most of the cash and they mostly perform music from 1750-1900 and they perform in specially designed halls. These concert halls are usually great for classical music and not so good for anything else. The orchestras that are using these halls are not very mobile. Oonce in a while they go to another big concert hall to perform but they don’t reach the beaches, forrest or some abandon mine outside the tiny town of Norberg like the freelance musician do. This leads to that most people don´t get to experience diversity within music unless they travel to or live in a city. Sometimes most of the municipal cultural funding is used to pay for an administrative post, there´s hardly anything left for the actual art. All in the false sense that the money is used to promote art, it’s not. If the funds are not given to people that actually create some artistic thing, then it is usually wasted.

The money that we, the tax payers, put in should be used as responsibly as possible. We have to consider what the actual purpose is for having anything funded by our taxes. In this case it is to provide artistic experiences to tax payers, junkies, less fortunate, very fortunate, children and so on. So the most effective way would be to have less institutions and administrators and cut out a lot of the red tape and costly middle hands. Now you have to, as an artist, write a huge application and when you’re done you do a smaller presentation of the result. The application take at least a week to complete, and more or less a year from idea to when the creative process can start. The idea is sometimes out of date by then and it is also hard to work with other genres of art and sometimes even other genres of music. If you as a musician wants to collaborate with a puppeteer then you have to fill out another big application because another part of the institution has to approve it and the administrative costs pile up. The money that is approved to bring arts to the public is a fraction of the administration cost especially if you include the enormous free of charge administrative work the artist does.

My solution is that everybody that has proven themselves as artists and as project leaders during the first seven dog years should get a credit card. In the beginning there’s not much money on that card, maybe 20 000 SEk (2000 euros) and if you get one of those credit cards you have to do a proper presentation of how you have used those fundings, and if you don´t behave you have to pay it back and you loose the card forever. The card is not for the artists, it is for the artists projects. 2000 euros is not a lot money, but if the artist work together with other credit card holders they can stretch the cash even further and when they get older and more experienced, they receive more and more money. This would open up a closer collaboration between the more experienced artists and the freshly graduated.

The card should not be given only to those who are classically trained or trained within the jazz or world music field, it should be given to heavy metal bands like Meshugga, Vindictiv, punk rocker and puppeteer Liten Falkenholm, acrobats, actors, the extremely overrated and bullshit painter/sculpturer Lars Vilks, in short every artistic expression. By using this idea you could cooperate with any living genre in the world and do it quickly and create really up to date art. The money to finance this credit card would come from seriously cutting down on administration and cost of institutions. I want more art for the tax payers money.

Thank you for reading

RANK is a shining example of an organisation that has eliminated as much red tape as possible and have very low administrative costs. They are all about more art to the people.

I was doing a little tour in the US in 2006, I was playing a couple of gigs in Pennsylvania and in Texas and since I was in the US for five weeks I had a lot of spare time. I had my base in Philadelphia, staying for most of the time with my dear friend David Laganella and his wife Hillary in the city center. I really love Philadelphia, the city is really perfect in many ways. The city center is great to walk around in and I was staying close to the little park at Rittenhouse Square, so I was right in the middle of the city.

The days were pretty lazy. I got up had breakfast, practised a few hours and walked around in the city, had some rehearsals with Duane Large and then the occasionally concert or BBQ. I always adapt very quickly when I travel, within minutes I
have made the hotel room, or whatever space I have to make my own, homelike and I feel like I’ve been living there for years. Pretty handy for a guy who travel more than 150 days a year.

In Texas I had the fortune to stay with my oldest friend Mats Nilsson. We have been hanging out since kinder garden and we’ve somehow always got our self into trouble, and  this time was no exception. Mats and I had borrowed some crappy bikes from his campus at Texas A&M and headed towards a steak house and as usual we biked as fast as we could. I was winning our little race and I was biking towards a four way crossing and as I got down the pavement and into the crossing I noticed that the curb was a lot higher than I had anticipated. I tried to get the wheel up but it hit the curb and I went flying through the air. As I was levitating above ground I realized that I was performing a concert the next day so I tried to protect my nails on the right hand, as they are involved in the plucking the strings on the guitar. I landed with a big bang on my head and got a pretty bruised shoulder, as I was trying to sit up and focus I noticed that the cars that were waiting for a green light just got that and without even looking at me they drove of. To top it off I could hear Mats laughing his head of. Bastard! Since Mats was working in a lab we had my little finger x-rayed and it turned out to be broken, so we took some plaster and made a little cast to support it and I managed to perform the concert the next day. That should at least teach me not to ride a bike in Texas, you drive a car. But at least I won the race and all the glory that came with it.

I was also staying with another dear friend in Philadelphia, Richard Belcastro and his then soon to be wife Lily, for a couple of days and at their place is where I first came across Aqua Teen Hunger Force. ATHF is a cartoon about a milk shake (Master Shake), a meatball (Meatwad), a bag of fries (Frylock) and their human neighbour Carl. In the first season they are some kind of a private crime fighting team led by Master Shake, Shake is a pretty bad leader since he is the most selfish character of them all, and that is saying quite a bit. Master Shake’s power is that he can squirt some goo from his straw, not very useful and if I remember correctly it never stops anything. Frylock does have some power though, he usually ends up saving them all from harm. Meatwad is very young and naive little meatball, he can change shape and sleeps on a grill.

There’s a couple of little Moninites in the show, they are little 8-bit graphic characters from the moon. ATHF was really put in front of the mainstream audience because of these little dudes. As a part of a marketing campaign in 2007 the ATHF marketing team drove around Boston, USA, and put up battery powered led signs of the Moninites. The Boston police department considered the signs as bombs and the bomb squads where called in and disarmed the little fellas. The media had a frenzy and the Boston PD criticized the campaign pretty hard. Well the show got a boost and the Boston PD got a bomb exercise.

To end this nonsense text about a cartoon show and my little trivia travels I would like to post a link to a, probably illegally uploaded, clip on youtube. The clip is from the first few minutes of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie. This is how I would like to start at least one of my concerts before I die. The song probably illustrates pretty well what composers will do to you if you download their music without paying for it.
